Motivarti Mentorship

Hey Guys!

In the past 10 weeks I've had the great honor of working with my mentor, the amazing Scott Watanabe, from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Scott has worked as a Visual Development Artist on beautiful films like Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, and Paperman. The mentorship program is called Motivarti Mentorship, and I highly recommend applying; it is one of the greatest learning experiences I've ever had in my career!!

I can't express enough how grateful I am to be working with Scott; I've been a huge fan of his work for years, and I feel so fortunate he chose to mentor me. He's an incredible teacher, guiding me with specific, honest and valuable feedback on my portfolio (taking time and care to give me page-by-page feedback, and even sharing his own!) as well as helping me improve my character designs; he would take time to draw over my sketches to show where I can improve my form, solidify or push the character in ways I hadn't thought of. He's given me constructive critiques which helped me gain a deeper understanding of the depths of better, more effective design. It made me realize the incredible amount of deliberate thought, design reasoning, and iteration involved with the process--which was more than I could ever have gathered from studying hundreds of making-of books and all of my favorite artists' works! He also shared his thoughts on the philosophy behind good composition, color, style and other essential foundations. Scott is so, SO kind and patient to work with, and I am still amazed at how extremely generous he is when it comes to sharing his process! I always felt so inspired after a session with him!

I deeply appreciate all he's done to help me grow; the mentorship is truly a humbling, motivating, and enormously valuable experience that may come just once-in-a-lifetime!

Thank you, Scott and Motivarti Mentorship, for everything!!

See you at CTN,
~Genevieve

Below I wanted to share some process work and the final illustration I did, based on the Beatles song, "Octopus's Garden." Enjoy! ^__^

Free Birds!

Hi Guys!

I am so excited I can FINALLY post this! It was an enormous honor to have worked with the Reel FX team as an independent contractor, doing some character designs for the animated movie, "Free Birds" (previously known as "Turkeys"). I did some designs for the main female heroine, Jenny, as well as some generic pilgrims. Hope you guys like 'em! ^__^

And check out the movie if you haven't seen it yet!

Cheers!

Thank you for a great APE 2013!

Hey Everyone!

To all of you who visited me at APE this year: THANK YOU!! ^__^ You guys really made this an exciting and memorable one and I'm truly grateful for all the incredible support you've given me. It made me so happy to see everyone who stopped by, old friends and new, to say hello. I only wish I had more time to walk around to see everything and visit everyone--there were so many amazing folks boothing this year. APE keeps getting better!

I am still working full-time and have many, many freelance and personal projects going on the side. There's lots of things I can't wait to share with you all, and I hope I can soon!

I'm hoping to have more updates later this week. Until then, here is a long overdue sketchtrade I did for my friend Norm, who loves dinos!

Cheers!

"Skullgirls" PC Release Today on Steam! (& Other Updates)

Hey Guys!

Here is some fan art of Minette and Ms. Fortune I had the pleasure of creating for my buddy Alex Ahad, Creator of the awesome fighting game, Skullgirls! Being a HUGE fan of Alex's work, and a Skullgirls fan from the very beginning, I was honored that he'd asked me to do a piece and I had a ton of fun working on it! ^__^

This will be in the Gallery Section of Skullgirls shortly after the PC release (via patch update), which releases today, August 22nd, 2013! If you haven't played it yet, GO OUT AND GET IT!! The art and animation in this game is absolutely MIND-BLOWINGLY AWESOME! @__@

Hope you guys like! ^__^

So I did this a while back for March MODOK Madness, but I was late! T__T I imagined a random crossover with Dr. Doofenshmirtz and M.O.D.O.K. doing a silly song and dance number... anyway I later find out about "Phineas & Ferb: Mission Marvel" and I was super blown away by the coincidence!! Well, it premiered on August 16th on Disney XD, and unfortunately a Dr. Doof and M.O.D.O.K. duet never happened, but here you go! And yes, Hulk took the cheese bait from the... Mousetrap-inator?

On a side note, I got to meet the cast of Phineas & Ferb at San Diego Comic Con 2013, and in this goofy pic you can see how incredibly happy I was to meet Dan Povenmire, co-creator of the show and voice of Dr. Doofenshmirtz! Hehehe! XD

Till Next Time! ^___^

Thank You To All the Sly Fans and Friends and Followers of my Tumblr and Blog! ^__^

Hey Guys!

I’ve been super busy with work and hadn’t had a chance to post lately! I just wanted to take a moment to say how wonderful you guys have made me feel--thank you so much for all the Likes, Comments that have made me smile, and for enjoying my work enough to Follow me on Tumblr and Blogspot. You guys are THE BEST!!! ^___^

Now on to the update, hehe! This isn’t in any sort of order, but here are some of my super rough sketches of story beats that were loosely happening throughout Sly 4. I say ‘loosely’ because we had to get these done super fast and early on in the production stage… even before I knew how the villains would really be defeated (Mrs. Decibel rolled up in a rug; The Grizz crushed by a rock). The sketch of Bob Cooper was done way before we ever started the Ice Age level (I didn’t even know his name was going to be Bob let alone what he looked like, lol)! I just remember thinking, ‘Prehistoric Sly = giant sabertooth neanderthal raccoon??’ These were fun, though!

Some have requested that I post more characters, and in particular, Penelope! So here are my Penelope concepts!

 ~ ~ ~
For Anon and a few of those who requested Geisha Banners, here are some (some borderline NSFW?) geisha banner designs I concepted out!
~ ~ ~
I forgot to post these SUPER early rough concepts of Carmelita with the other bunch. Just playing with hairstyles, faces and clothing for her.

~ ~ ~
On the topic of mice, I’ve also included some Mouse Trooper sketches...
~ ~ ~
Some drawings of Sir Galleth I did for Ghostbot’s Flash cinematic cut-scenes.

~ ~ ~
Some Giant Salamander statue designs, a cobra found in Arabia, and some sketches of the giant fish tank, playing with types of fish and having fun with Sly and Murray’s crazy antics! ^__^

~ ~ ~
Another Geisha house mural, a Rioichi and Tennessee Kid Cooper design for the Flash cinematics, some bdesigns, Sumo Cat obstacle designs, signs around the Japan village (my personal fav is the barbershop sign!)

~ ~ ~
A fountain concept for the Japan level and some funny medieval torture devices.

Enjoy!
